When everything happens now<\/em><\/a>\u00a0heeft <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rushkoff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Douglas Rushkoff<\/a> een aantal interessante trends van deze tijd beschreven. Ik heb het boek &#8220;uitgeluisterd&#8221; met veel interesse en aandacht. De cases, verbanden en beschrijvingen van de huidige tijd vond ik erg herkenbaar. Het boek is genuanceerd en geen voor de hand liggend pamflet tegen media of de haast van deze tijd.<\/p>\n<p>De titel en ondertitel vatten het boek deels samen maar deels ook niet. &#8220;When everything happens now&#8221; zal voor velen herkenbaar zijn: veel social media, mail, dynamiek van nieuws en actualiteiten die snel ontvouwen, de schaal waarop we weten wat er overal ter wereld speelt &#8230; Maar de\u00a0<em>shock<\/em> zit erin dat velen van ons zich door al dat nieuws, die media en slimme apparaten juist niet in het n\u00f9 bevinden maar ergens anders zijn in tijd en plaats. je bent nu misschien fysiek wel in het park maar door tweets van iemand uit een ander land en een andere tijdzone te lezen over iets heel anders dan dat park ben je ook weer niet in dat park.<\/p>\n<p>De Tegenlicht uitzending van 24 april laat Rushkoff aan het woord onder de veelzeggende titel:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tegenlicht.vpro.nl\/afleveringen\/2013-2014\/de-herovering-van-het-nu.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;de herovering van het nu&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/embed.vpro.nl\/player\/?id=VPWON_1209795&amp;profile=tegenlicht\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In het boek worden vijf trends beschreven die alle tesamen maken dat het nu een andere betekenis heeft dan circa tien jaar geleden:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rushkoff identifies the five main ways we\u2019re struggling, as well as how the best of us are thriving in the now:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Narrative collapse &#8211; the loss of linear stories and their replacement with both crass reality programming and highly intelligent post-narrative shows like\u00a0<em>The Simpsons<\/em>. With no goals to justify journeys, we get the impatient impulsiveness of the Tea Party, as well as the unbearably patient presentism of the Occupy movement. The new path to sense-making is more like an open game than a story.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Digiphrenia \u2013 how technology lets us be in more than one place \u2013 and self &#8211; at the same time. Drone pilots suffer more burnout than real-world pilots, as they attempt to live in two worlds &#8211; home and battlefield &#8211; simultaneously. We all become overwhelmed until we learn to distinguish between data flows (like Twitter) that can only be dipped into, and data storage (like books and emails) that can be fully consumed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Overwinding \u2013 trying to squish huge timescales into much smaller ones, like attempting to experience the catharsis of a well-crafted, five-act play in the random flash of a reality show; packing a year\u2019s worth of retail sales expectations into a single Black Friday event \u2013 which only results in a fatal stampede; or \u2013 like the Real Housewives &#8211; freezing one\u2019s age with Botox only to lose the ability to make facial expressions in the moment. Instead, we can \u201cspringload\u201d time into things, like the \u201cpop-up\u201d hospital Israel sent to Tsunami-wrecked Japan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Fractalnoia \u2013 making sense of our world entirely in the present tense, by drawing connections between things \u2013 sometimes inappropriately. The conspiracy theories of the web, the use of Big Data to predict the direction of entire populations, and the frantic effort of government to function with no \u201cgrand narrative.\u201d But also the emerging skill of \u201cpattern recognition\u201d and the efforts of people to map the world as a set of relationships called TheBrain \u2013 a grandchild of McLuhan\u2019s \u201cglobal village\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Apocalypto \u2013 the intolerance for presentism leads us to fantasize a grand finale. \u201cPreppers\u201d stock their underground shelters while the mainstream ponders a zombie apocalypse, all yearning for a simpler life devoid of pings, by any means necessary. Leading scientists \u2013 even outspoken atheists &#8211; prove they are not immune to the same apocalyptic religiosity in their depictions of \u201cthe singularity\u201d and \u201cemergence\u201d, through which human evolution will surrender to that of pure information.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Wat mij betreft een aanrader!
